Abstract

This qualitative research aimed to examine how individuals apply culinary techniques and principles in their daily cooking practices through documentary analysis. Using a qualitative research design anchored in documentary analysis, the study analyzed various written, visual, and narrative sources such as cookbooks, culinary journals, online blogs, and home-cooking videos to interpret the lived culinary practices of individuals. The results revealed that people apply basic culinary techniques such as chopping, sautéing, boiling, frying, and baking in everyday food preparation, drawing from cultural traditions, learned skills, and personal creativity. These fundamental techniques are not merely procedural but are also reflective of efficiency, quality, and health consciousness in home-based cooking. The study further found that principles guiding food selection, preparation, and presentation emphasize nutritional balance, ingredient freshness, food safety, aesthetic appeal, and sustainability. Home cooks balance practicality with cultural and artistic expression by integrating budget considerations, local ingredient availability, and family traditions into their cooking. Moreover, the analysis underscored how cultural traditions, personal experiences, and access to resources influence individual culinary behaviors. Cultural heritage preserves traditional recipes and cooking methods, while personal experiences foster adaptation and innovation in food preparation. Limited access to tools or ingredients encourages resourcefulness and creativity, shaping how culinary principles are applied in diverse contexts. Overall, the findings highlight that everyday cooking is not just a functional task but a meaningful expression of identity, culture, and adaptability—where culinary knowledge becomes both a life skill and a form of cultural preservation deeply rooted in daily human experience.
