Operating Room Nurses’ Competency in Surgical Safety Checklist Implementation and Patient Safety Outcomes in Selected Primary Hospitals in Rizal Province

This study assessed the competency of Operating Room Nurses in implementing the Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) and determined its relationship with patient safety outcomes in five selected hospitals in Rizal Province. Specifically, it described the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, position or role in the surgical team, and length of operating room experience; determined the level of competency in SSC implementation in terms of knowledge of the SSC, adherence to safety protocols, documentation accuracy, and communication and team coordination; and examined patient safety outcomes in terms of reduction of surgical errors, compliance with patient safety standards, and quality of patient care. The study utilized a quantitative descriptive-correlational research design. A total of 64 Operating Room Nurses from five selected hospitals served as respondents and were selected through purposive sampling. Data were gathered using a researcher-made questionnaire and were analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, standard deviation, Pearson’s r, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. The study was anchored on Patricia Benner’s Novice to Expert Theory. The study's findings served as the basis for developing the GERON Program, an intervention designed to strengthen Surgical Safety Checklist implementation and enhance perioperative patient safety practices in selected hospitals in Rizal Province.
