Examining The Relationship Between Cultural Adaptation and Professional Growth Among Filipino Teachers in New Zealand

This study investigated the cultural adaptation and professional growth of Filipino teachers employed in New Zealand and examined the relationship between these variables and selected profile characteristics. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior and Transformational Leadership Theory, the study sought to understand how Filipino teachers navigate a bicultural educational environment while pursuing professional development in a foreign setting. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods research design. In the quantitative phase, data were collected from 40 Filipino teachers. through a structured survey questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, weighted mean, standard deviation, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, Spearman rho, t-test, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were employed. In the qualitative phase, focus group discussions were conducted to further explain and enrich the quantitative findings. Findings revealed that Filipino teachers demonstrated a high level of cultural adaptation and a great extent of professional growth across multiple domains. Despite these positive outcomes, teachers reported experiencing moderate challenges related to language communication barriers, cultural adjustment, professional development constraints, work conditions, and classroom management. The results indicated a significant positive relationship between cultural adaptation and professional growth. Qualitative findings highlighted the importance of supportive leadership, mentoring programs, inclusive school cultures, and professional learning opportunities. Based on the results, the Management Support Framework was developed to strengthen institutional support mechanisms, enhance cultural integration, and promote professional well-being. The study concluded that effective educational management practices played a critical role in fostering both cultural adaptation and professional growth among Filipino teachers working abroad.
